Avionics Design Engineer

We are seeking an Avionics Design Engineer to join our GCAA Part 21J Engineering team to design, develop, and certify avionics system installations on commercial and business aircraft, from initial concept through to GCAA approval. The role combines hands-on avionics design engineering with certification responsibilities, covering technical studies, installation design, wiring and system documentation, and the preparation of compliance and certification data packages for minor change approvals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze aircraft and system technical documentation to support modification and installation studies.
  • Develop avionics modification solutions and prepare preliminary and detailed installation designs in accordance with customer and project requirements.
  • Produce design data including block diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, routing plans, wire lists, harness documentation, and parts lists.
  • Select qualified installation components and support material sourcing, including evaluation of alternate parts.
  • Prepare engineering documentation such as drawings, service bulletins, installation instructions, Electrical Load Analysis, and compliance documents.
  • Participate in design reviews, customer meetings, aircraft surveys, and provide technical support during installation and MRO activities.
  • Define and maintain the certification basis, certification plan, and applicable airworthiness requirements for each modification.
  • Ensure certification requirements are incorporated into the installation design and identify applicable Airworthiness Directives.
  • Prepare and compile certification data packages, including compliance analyses, test documentation, equipment qualification, system descriptions, and continued airworthiness documents.
  • Review and validate compliance and justification data provided by external partners, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers
  • Report progress and certification related risks to Engineering Manager.
  • Liaise with the Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE) on technical and certification matters.
  • Coordinate with design team across the project lifecycle.
  • Maintain organized technical and certification records for each project.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical, Electrical, Avionics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in avionics design and certification within design organization environment.
  • Working knowledge of aircraft systems and architecture, including avionics ATA chapters (e.g. ATA 23, 31, 34, 44).
  • Prior experience working within a GCAA and/or EASA approved Part 21J Design Organization.
  • Experience with avionics wiring diagrams, schematics, and CAD/electrical design tools (e.g. AutoCAD, ElecView).
  • Knowledge of applicable certification specifications (e.g. CS-23/CS-25/CS-27/CS-29) and the minor change approval process.
  • Strong technical writing skills in English, with the ability to prepare clear certification and engineering documentation.
  • Good communication, organizational, and coordination skills, with the ability to work across design, certification, and production teams.
